Embargo Act
Embargo Act (oil and steel) August 1941: American Embargo Act because of their dependence on American exports causes an oil crisis in Japan. The United States was contacted by Konoe the prime minister of Japan but President Roosevelt refused to have a meeting over the Act until Japan left Chinese Territory. On October 16, 1941, Konoe resigned as the prime minister and was replaced by the pro-military General Hideki Tojo. The Japanese called for a preemptive strike against the US Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor, including strikes on the Philippines, Netherlands, East Indies, and British colonies. Unless a diplomatic break threw was to happen between the United States and Japan the Japanese emperor would declare an attack in December. (“Embargoes and Sanctions – World War II”)
Bombing of Pearl Harbor " December 7, 1941: A Day that Will Live in Infamy"
On December 7th 1941 Japan launched an attack on Pearl Harbor:
American Deaths: 2,368
Damage: sink four battleships, damage four others, Three cruisers damage two destroyers, 188 air crafts.
Japanese deaths: 64.
Only one Japanese solider was taken hostage and luckily the most advanced naval ships where not at the base that day they where off doing training drills. The day after the bombing President Roosevelt addressed the nation naming December 7th 1941 the day that will live in infamy. the president also announced that the actions that Japan had taken against the United States would not go unpunished.
December 8th, 1941 the United States Declares war on Japan.
